East Meets West In Clinics
From an article by Anthony D. Morris, LAc,
in the Ukiah Daily Journal, February 18, 2003 Throughout more than 30 years in western allopathic medicine as a Laboratory Scientist and Lab Manager in hospitals, I have always maintained an avid interest in alternative and complementary medicine. This interest, combined with a passion for healing people, led me to the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco to study acupuncture and Chinese Herbology. In the fall of 2001, I traveled to China to study acupuncture and work under Dr. Feng Ninghan and other masters of TCM at Zhejiang Unilversity in Hangzhou, China. My wife, Mary and I lived in this large and beautiful city near Shanghai. The Chinese call Hangzhou "Heaven on earth" and it has become the favorite vacation spot for the people of China.
I am a licensed acupuncturist with an office in Ukiah, California. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from Cornell University and Master of Science degree from American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco.
I maintain a complete Chinese Herbal pharmacy with raw herbs that I mix into formulas for my patients to cook into decoctions, or teas. Each patient is unique and requires his or her own specific herbal formula and/or acupuncture treatment. I also may suggest dietary changes and additional supplements from the health food store. I draw from as many sources as necessary when treating patients, though my emphasis is always Chinese Medicine. Having knowledge of both eastern and western medicine has given me a broad perspective. Generally, western medicine's approach is to relieve the symptoms of disease or pathology with medications or invasive surgical techniques. In contrast, eastern medicine's approach is to balance the body's energy by reestablishing homeostasis and restoring the body's vital health.
